Where do things stand on Baker Mayfield’s unsolved commercial front

Baker Mayfield officially remains on the Cleveland Browns roster in a state of professional limbo. Apologized by a mandatory mini-camp as he continues to rehabilitate from off-season shoulder surgery in Austin, Texas, the former first-pick and Heisman Trophy winner awaits a change of scenery.

“He’s quiet for now,” a league source said.

Baker Mayfield’s current trading position

The Browns want to trade Mayfield and lose as much of his $ 18.8 million salary as possible. Mayfield, likewise, wants to be swapped and have a fresh start and potentially a lucrative new contract with a new NFL employer.

Despite that shared desire for divorce in what has become an extremely awkward relationship, especially after the Browns’ controversial swap for quarterback Deshaun Watson and the signing of a fully secured $ 230 million deal, the status quo remains in place.

There has been no significant recent move towards the Browns being able to execute a trade for Mayfield, and no trade is forthcoming, according to league sources not authorized to speak publicly. The Carolina Panthers, having held business discussions during the Mayfield draft that didn’t come close to a deal, are not considered a likely destination as another potential business partner: the Seattle Seahawks.

If the Browns were to move and increase the amount of Mayfield’s salary they would be willing to hire to facilitate a trade, that could speed up the process.

The time for a sense of urgency to strike a deal, which ideally would have taken place before the end of the minicamps, has passed. Now, the new goal for the Browns would be to take care of this long affair before retirement or failing that, the start of the regular season.

The interest between the Seahawks and Mayfield is mutual, according to league sources.

The Seahawks depth chart to the quarterback determines this situation more than anything else. The Seahawks have Drew Lock and Geno Smith currently competing for the starting job.

They have $ 16.3 million of available salary cap space, so they would need to make some adjustments to absorb Mayfield’s current salary or extend it.

Meanwhile, the Browns await a long suspension for Watson. According to sources, the NFL Players Association fears the league will seek to suspend former Clemson star for the entire 2022 season, if not indefinitely. If that happens, the Browns should move on with Jacoby Brissett rather than try to reconcile with Mayfield.

A scenario where they try to mend the wards with Mayfield and have him play another season for them after actually turning him down as their boyfriend is considered nearly impossible to make.

Browns manager Kevin Stefanski has dealt with Mayfield’s predicament this off-season

“I think it’s a unique situation,” said Stefanski. “We have to see how it turns out. We all would like an answer, yes or no, it’s not reality. … I think we’ll see. I think everyone understands the situation and we hope that sooner or later there will be a closure ”.

Mayfield completed 60.5% of his shots and passed for 3,010 yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions last season in 14 games while dealing with a shoulder injury. Also, he rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown.

During a conversation on the “Ya Never Know” podcast, Mayfield broke the silence about his tumultuous offseason and unsolved state with the Browns.

“I have no regrets about my time in Cleveland, what I tried to give to that place,” Mayfield said. “The question of respect will be all a personal opinion. I feel disrespected, 100%. I was told one thing and they completely did another.

“This is what I’m in the middle of right now. And you know what, I got my taste because I’ve had four different coaches in four years. 2021 was miserable: a bunch of different coordinators. I’m just looking for stabilization right now.

Mayfield said he initially thought the Indianapolis Colts were where he was headed prior to their swap with the Atlanta Falcons to acquire quarterback Matt Ryan. He also referred to the Seahawks as an intriguing possibility.

Previously, Mayfield had said goodbye to Cleveland on social media.

“I don’t know where I’ll go next,” Mayfield said. “You can’t be in control. … I had a great time in my rookie year. I’m in a good place right now. I have no idea where I’m going. I have no idea where I’m going, but I’m not nervous. I’ll check what I can check. Here’s what it is.”
