There are riches in the niches.

Take Jeff Scott, please.

He only has 3-18 total in his first two seasons as USF head coach. But give him more than seven days to prepare and he is 5-0 against the spread (ATS). The Bulls will leave on October 22 before heading to Houston a week later.

Coaches who maximize goodbye weeks and long weeks consistently beat the number. Below are the top 10, along with the week they all came out of a two week hiatus this season.

minimum 9 games

10. Kyle Whittingham, Utah (since 2005)

ATS after a goodbye: 19-11-2 (60%)
2022 Goodbye: October 22 (Washington State October 27)

Few coaches are better with Whittingham’s extra time, who is also 9-5 ATS in bowls matches.

9. Chris Creighton, Eastern Michigan (since 2014)

ATS after a goodbye: 9-5 (64%)
Goodbye 2022: November 5 (in Akron on November 8)

After this year’s farewell week, the Eagles are on their way, where they are 30-17-1 ATS under Creighton.

T8. Jeff Brohm, Purdue (since 2017)

ATS after a goodbye: 7-3 (70%)
2022 Goodbye: October 29 (v Iowa November 5)

Brohm is also 19-8 ATS as the underdog, so the Boilermakers are an even more interesting game if they score points from Iowa in week 10.

T8. PJ Fleck, Minnesota (since 2017)

ATS after a goodbye: 7-3 (70%)
2022 Goodbye: October 8 (in Illinois October 15)

Fleck has consistently been one of the Big Ten’s top ATS coaches since leaving MAC for Minnesota five years ago.

6. Pat Narduzzi, Pitt (since 2015)

5. Bill Clark, UAB (since 2014)

4. Philip Montgomery, Tulsa (since 2015)

ATS after a goodbye: 12-4 (75%)
2022 Goodbye: October 15 (in Temple on October 21)

A good argument can be made for Montgomery as the most underrated ATS manager of the past seven seasons.
– Tulsa 2022 program

3. Dana Dimel, UTEP (since 2018)

ATS after a goodbye: 7-2 (78%)
Games after goodbye week:: 15 October (against FAU on 22 October) and 12 November (against FIU on 19 November)

While Dimel is only 12-33 in total with the Miners, he was great at convincing his team to at least fight with the extra prep time.
– UTEP 2022 program

2. Jay Norvell, State of Colorado (2017-2021 in Nevada)

ATS after a goodbye: 7-2-1 (78%)

1. Dave Doeren, State of NC (since 2013)

ATS after a goodbye: 15-4 (79%)
Game after goodbye week: October 22 (v Virginia Tech October 27)
