A disappointing first season follows in which he only scored 15 goals in 44 games and disrupted the club’s campaign by releasing a televised interview in December in which he criticized manager Thomas Tuchel.

The Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Lukaku was thrilled when he was informed by his lawyer Sebastien Ledure that a turning point had been reached in the talks between Chelsea and Inter on Tuesday.

It came after talks stalled on Monday when Inter president Steven Zhang attempted to restructure the deal. But Lukaku will have a medical visit to Inter next week to confirm the move.

Lukaku has a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2026 but his desire to return to Inter has been evident since his infamous interview with Sky Italia.

Also in Italy this week it emerged that Lukaku has set in motion the return to Inter by calling the coach Simone Inzaghi on his birthday in April and asking: ‘Mister, what should I do to return?’

The conversation came the day before Chelsea played a Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid, in which Lukaku missed a good chance to score and didn’t find the net for over a month later.

Chelsea new owner Todd Boehly wanted the deal with Lukaku to be concluded quickly so the club could focus on pursuing its summer goals, including Manchester City and England winger Raheem Sterling.

They also want a deal for Sterling to be completed as quickly as possible so that he can have an entire preseason with Tuchel and his new teammates.

Lukaku lived two successful seasons at Inter between 2019 and 2021, scoring 64 goals in 95 games and winning the Scudetto in 2020-21.
