Pastrnak to Devils trade “bogus” rumors

With the 2022 NHL Draft in Montreal two weeks away from Thursday, NHL Trade rumors are starting to catch on.

A rumor that took over social media on Wednesday and became a “report” on some legal outlets online and on the radio involved Boston Bruins winger David Pastrnak heading to the New Jersey Devils in a package that would have seen the Bruins acquire the second overall pick. The problem was that it was simply a hypothetical commercial proposition from the writer – who made it crystal clear – and not even a commercial voice from the NHL. In fact, when Boston Hockey Now inquired about the so-called NHL commercial rumor, a source from the New Jersey Devils and a source from Bruins agreed it was “Bogus!”

On Tuesday, Matt Grazel covers the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Rangers, and New Jersey Devils for The Hockey Writers, suggesting that if the New Jersey Devils are, or accept offers for second best, general manager Tom Fitzgerald should delve into The Outside Boston Bruins David Pastrnak, who was the subject of NHL commercial rumors two weeks ago. Remember, Pastrnak agent JP Barry, via Boston Herald reporter Steve Conroy, denied a rift between Pastrnak and CEO Don Sweeney. The reported rift stemmed from a source close to Pastrnak, who is entering the final season of his contract, telling The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa that Pastrnak had no plans to sign an extension with the Bruins if Sweeney was still general manager. when he becomes eligible to trade one next month.

“1988 saw how Don treated his two best friends,” a source close to Pastrnak wrote to The Athletic in a message on June 7. “There’s no way he’ll be back with Sweens as GM.”

This prompted his agent to tell Conroy the following:

“I spoke to Don and David this morning and we don’t know where this report came from,” Barry told the Boston Herald on June 8. “We both have a solid relationship with Don and the plan hasn’t changed one iota. We will sit down in July and begin extension negotiations.”

Just like in the weeks leading up to the NHL Trade deadline, it’s important to sift through rumors or reports instead of a writer simply proposing a hypothetical trade. Unfortunately, in today’s media world, legitimate news outlets actually pick up speculation as they did on Wednesday and flag it as a legitimate rumor. In fact, if they had actually done some Google searches regarding the commercial NHL rumors surrounding the Devils and the second pick overall, they would have stumbled upon a piece I wrote for Montreal Hockey Now on June 18th.

“Well I can tell you this, talking recently with the general managers of the league, there are teams that call ‘Fitz’ [Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald] but right now that’s really all it was – like, hey ‘Fitz’, are you willing to move the pick? – and that’s it for now, ”an NHL executive source told me. “You’re looking at an impactful NHL role player, second rounder and prospect, or if not an impactful guy in the NHL, at least a good player, first-round choice and prospect. I know they really want D and a goalkeeper. “

Last time I checked, Pastrnak doesn’t play defense or play with pipes. That’s not to say Fitzgerald wouldn’t be interested in the 26-year-old sniper, but right now, any talk about Pastrnak and that second pick is pure speculation. The silly season is upon us! Have fun, but unless someone references a source on any business proposition or rumors, be careful what you believe.
