NBA 2022 draft results, takeaway: magic tricks experts take Paolo Banchero to number 1, wreaking havoc

There aren’t usually too many surprises in the NBA Draft in this day and age, but Thursday night kicked off with a major one when the Orlando Magic selected forward Duke Paolo Banchero as their # 1 pick overall. For weeks, the expectation was that they would get Jabari Smith out of Auburn, and it’s still unclear if it was all an elaborate smokescreen or if they changed their minds at the last minute.

The Magic have reportedly never hosted Banchero for a formal training or interview in Orlando, which suggests it may be the latter.

In any case, the Oklahoma City Thunder then eliminated the great Chet Holmgren from Gonzaga, while the Houston Rockets went with Smith to complete the top three. The Rockets had probably planned Banchero, but Smith should still fit in well as a sharp striker to pair with Jalen Green.

Of course, no draft could be complete without the Sacramento Kings doing something out of the box, and they took Keegan Murray with the number 4 overall pick despite nearly all predictions suggesting Purdue’s Jaden Ivey was the clear fourth-best player. Maybe they truly believe in Murray, or maybe they were wary of guarding their first pick for the third consecutive year.

Either way, it worked for the Detroit Pistons, who were happy to get Ivey to number 5. Having got Cade Cunningham with top pick last year, they now have the characteristics of a fantastic young backfield.
