You probably know people who love diet sodas, maybe even too much. In recent years, demand for diet, low-calorie, and sugar-free versions of brands like Coca-Cola, Sprite and Pepsi has flooded grocery store shelves … and people seem to never get enough of them. According to a report by Grand View Research, the size of the global diet soda market is projected to reach $ 5.2 billion by 2025. And this, at a time when we all know the harmful health effects of consuming sodas. it should arrive with some hesitation.
Although it has a catchy name, the diet soda is one of those things that shouldn’t be part of your daily drinking routine. Not only is it bad for you, but there are six types of people, in particular, who should never drink diet sodas due to its health side effects, according to doctors.

Diet soda is widely known in the gastrointestinal community to irritate the gut, so those with irritable bowel syndrome should stay away from these popular fizzy drinks. “Artificial sugars used in diet sodas are often difficult to digest or absorb from the human intestine, which causes bloating, diarrhea and abdominal pain in many patients,” he says. Dr. Jonathon Kung, MD, Mount Sinai gastroenterologist. “Artificial sugars are also known in some cases to alter the intestinal bacterial population in humans resulting in worsening of gastrointestinal symptoms.”
According to the Mayo Clinic and the American Migraine Foundation, artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, which are commonly found in diet sodas, may be a possible trigger for migraines. “Artificial sugars used in diet sodas have been linked to more frequent migraines, worsening chronic headaches and irritability,” says Kung.
Heartburn is no fun for anyone, but did you know that diet soda could actually be one of the culprits?
“Fizzy drinks like soda are known to weaken the closing ability of the lower esophageal sphincter (which separates the stomach from the esophagus), which leads to acid reversal into the esophagus, thus causing heartburn symptoms.” Kung states.
Those with heartburn may also want to stay away from alcohol, peppermint, tomatoes, and coffee.
While people with diabetes or who are watching their blood sugar levels may think that opting for a diet soda is the way to go, they may want to reconsider. “Artificial sweeteners commonly found in diet sodas have been linked to an increased likelihood of type 2 diabetes and increased insulin resistance,” says Kung.
Additionally, diet soda has been linked to the development of diabetic retinopathy, according to a study published in Clinical and experimental ophthalmology.
Similar to heartburn, those with gastroesophageal reflux disease, known as GERD, will want to stay away from diet soda. “GERD is the result of stomach acid rising from the stomach into the esophagus, often causing symptoms of heartburn, acid reflux and indigestion,” she says. Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare inherited disease that causes an amino acid called phenylalanine to build up in the body. PKU is caused by a change in the gene needed to make the enzyme needed to break down phenylalanine.
